When should you get an International Driving Permit?
Get it at home, before the flight, if a police officer or a handover agent would otherwise need a translation. English and French licences are the ones Tiloto can read on the spot. A permit does not replace the original licence. You carry both, plus the passport, for the whole rental.
Rules for visitors are set by Mauritius, not by a rental website. If your home motoring agency says your particular licence needs a permit, follow that advice even when a friend drove last year without one. The cost of the permit at home is smaller than a roadside conversation you cannot finish.
What does Tiloto check at pickup?
A second driver needs the same papers and must be named before pickup. Adding a friend in the car park is how deposits get messy. The driving guide covers the road itself once the papers are done.
