Why is this a daylight-only drive?
The last kilometres into Chamarel are hairpins under trees. Black River Gorges National Park adds mist that sits on the road after rain, including in the drier months of May to October. There is no prize for finishing the coloured earth at dusk and then inventing the way down. Turn around while you can still see the next bend.
Fill the tank on the coast first. A quarter tank feels fine on the M1 and thin when you are climbing with the air conditioning on. An offline map matters because the signal drops. The Seven Coloured Earth is a managed park with an entrance, not a free lay-by. Chamarel waterfall is a separate stop nearby. Do not promise yourself both plus three hikes.
Which Tiloto car belongs on the hairpins?
The Swift at Rs 1,600 per day is the default: five seats, a bit more boot for water, and an easier ride than asking the S-Presso to be a tour bus. The S-Presso still does the road for two careful drivers. The Ertiga is for the family that will not split into two cars, and it needs more patience on the narrow sections. Treat it as a whole daylight day from a west-coast base, not as a two-hour side trip from Grand Baie. Viewpoints plus the coloured earth is enough. Add hikes only if you still have hours of light.
Is Black River Gorges National Park a walking park or a driving park?
Both, but with a rental car, plan the viewpoints by car first. Walks are shorter stops, not a reason to be on the ridge after dusk.
